The tuba is the lowest-pitched instrument of the brass family and serves as the bass voice in all musical genres. Tubas are most commonly pitched in three different keys: CC, BBb, and Eb. The Sousaphone, designed by composer John Phillip Sousa, is a tuba shaped for ease of carrying by a marching player, with a forward-facing bell. Concert tubas resemble large euphoniums and have bells that face upward. Tubas are used primarily in marching band, concert band, brass ensembles, and orchestra, but can also be found in Dixieland and jazz groups.

Most beginning band programs do not offer tuba, so many tubists begin as trombone or trumpet students. Due to its large size, tuba requires a great amount of air to play. As with other brass instruments, tubists use their lips as the primary producer of pitch. Having a "good ear" is essential to becoming a successful tubist. Our low brass instructors at Pellegrino Fine Arts Academy are highly-qualified professionals with the experience and expertise necessary to help any student, regardless of age or ability level, achieve their musical goals!
