The piano is considered the "universal" instrument and is found in all musical genres. Despite its vast repertoire and ubiquitous presence in Western culture, the piano is a relatively young instrument. The piano is unique in that it is a member of both the string and percussion families. The earliest ancestor of the piano is the hammered dulcimer - a stringed instrument struck with small hammers to produce sound. Other predecessors to the piano include the harpsichord (a keyboard instrument that uses a plucking mechanism to produce sound), and the clavichord (an early form of piano that used a tangent hammer mechanism to produce sound).

Bartolomeo Cristofori (1655-1731) is credited with the invention of the modern piano. Through Cristofori's development, the instrument grew in range and (unlike its predecessors) became capable of variations in volume. The formal name for the piano - pianoforte - is derived from the Italian words "piano" (soft) and "forte" (loud). Due to the piano's extensive range and melodic and harmonic capabilities, it is the perfect "first" instrument for young musicians. Our piano instructors at Pellegrino Fine Arts Academy are highly-qualified professionals adept at teaching students of all ages and ability levels - beginner, through advanced.
