3 Reasons to Make This the Most Musical Summer Ever!
May 8, 2015
Summertime. School's out. No more homework, no more tests, no more classes. It's time for long, lazy summer days filled with nothing but sun and fun. It's the time of year students look forward to most - freedom from all things academic. Summer is also the time when many students toss their instruments in the back of the closet along with their book bags...not to be touched again until fall. While summer may seem like a good time to take a break from practice and music lessons, tossing that instrument in the closet for a month or more can prove counterproductive to the progress a student has made throughout the school year. Here are some reasons why summer is the perfect time to hone your musical skills...
Music keeps your brain active!
Music and math are interrelated. By practicing and taking music lessons during the summer, the areas of your brain that control logic, spatial perception, coordination, and analytical processing are stimulated, increasing cognitive function as well as improving both short and long-term memory. For example: most students are required to take Algebra and/or Geometry in high school. But, as adults, how many people could pass an algebra or geometry exam from a course they took years ago? If algebra and geometry aren't part of your daily life, chances are that information has long since been forgotten. Simply stated, it's "use it or lose it." Keeping your brain stimulated through music increases your overall cognitive function and has benefits far beyond the practice room!
Improve your skills!
Throughout the school year, students' obligations pull them in many different directions. Homework, exams, projects, classes, and extra-curricular activities vie for a student's attention, and practice time is often squeezed in as time allows. In summer, all that changes. With academic obligations shelved, students have more time to devote to their instrument. Want to develop better technique? Still need to learn all those scales? Summer is the perfect time to tackle those issues you've put on the back burner throughout the school year. Taking music lessons throughout the summer will help you maintain your discipline to practice and will improve your musicianship. And, when the school year begins anew, the practice you devoted during the summer will place you three steps ahead...instead of three steps behind!
Making music is fun!
As any musician can tell you, learning to play an instrument takes a
great deal of time, discipline, patience, and effort. With the amount of
work involved, it's easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. Music is
meant to be enjoyed...by musicians and listeners alike. As with
any endeavor, enjoyment and satisfaction increase proportionately to
acquired skill and knowledge. The delayed gratification a musician
experiences through careful practice and years of study awards a
listener the instant gratification only music can provide. It's a
win/win for everyone!
So, what are you waiting for? Summer will soon be here. It's time to open that instrument case, dust off that piano, and tune those guitar strings. Our studios at Pellegrino Fine Arts Academy are open year-round and our instructors are here to help YOU become the best musician you can be!
