The French horn carries the distinction of being one the earliest members of the brass family. The first metal horns consisted of wound brass tubing and were only capable of producing notes within the overtone series. Over the course of centuries, the French horn evolved into a complex series of valves and tubing that, when unwound, stretches over twenty feet in length!

Due to the complexity of the modern French horn, it takes a well-trained ear and great skill to master the instrument’s nearly four-octave range. Most band programs do not introduce French horn until the second or third year of study, therefore, many hornists begin as trumpet or trombone students. Our French horn instructors at Pellegrino Fine Arts Academy combine years of educational and performance experience to help students of all ability levels – from beginning to advanced – achieve their musical goals!
