While the terms "baritone" and "euphonium" are often used interchangeably, there are distinct differences between the two, despite their often unison band scoring. Euphoniums are generally considered the tenor member of the tuba family and are written for in bass clef concert pitch. Baritones are slightly smaller, pitched in Bb, and are written for in treble clef. Students who are transitioning from trumpet to euphonium often begin by playing baritone, which allows them to become comfortable with a larger instrument that reads in the same clef and shares the same fingerings as the trumpet.
Euphoniums are used primarily in concert bands and brass ensembles, while baritones are most commonly found in middle school bands. As with other members of the brass family, baritone/euphonium players use their lips as the primary source of sound production. Having a "good ear" is essential to becoming a successful baritone/euphonium player. Our brass instructors at Pellegrino Fine Arts Academy are highly qualified professionals who possess the knowledge and experience necessary to help all students - beginner through advanced - achieve their musical goals.
