The cello (also known as violoncello) is the tenor member of the orchestral string family and is equally versatile as a harmonic instrument or solo voice. Considerably larger than its soprano and alto counterparts (violin and viola), the cello is supported by a peg at its base and rests between the player's knees. Due to the instrument's extensive range, cellists are required to read bass, tenor, and treble clef interchangeably. Like violins and violas, cellos are sized incrementally for younger students and are available in 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 reproductions of full-sized instruments.
Unlike the piano, in which pitch and tone quality are determined solely by the instrument itself, the cello requires a great amount of training and practice to achieve an in-tune, pleasant sound. In addition, string players need to possess a good sense of pitch as finger placement even a millimeter off can drastically affect intonation. Our cello instructors at Pellegrino Fine Arts Academy understand the complexity of mastering this instrument and possess the knowledge and experience to help all students - beginner through advanced - achieve their musical goals!
